BEIJING – China reiterated on Saturday that the case of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was a political persecution that targeted a Chinese national with the aim of suppressing Chinese high-tech companies.

Even the HSBC – the "victim" named by the US side – has released files proving Meng's innocence, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying

In response to a media query, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said the Chinese side's position on Meng Wanzhou's case has been consistent and clear.

The so-called fraud charges against Meng are nothing but pure fabrication, she said. Even the HSBC – the "victim" named by the US side – has released files proving Meng's innocence.

What the United States and Canada have done is a typical case of arbitrary detention, Hua added.

Meng was arrested by Canadian authorities at the request of the US in December 2018.

She was accused of misrepresenting Huawei's relationship with Skycom in a PowerPoint presentation to the HSBC bank in 2013 and putting the bank at risk of violating US sanctions against Iran. Meng and Huawei repeatedly denied the accusation.

Meng reached an agreement with US prosecutors on Friday and returned to China on Saturday, after being arbitrarily detained for more than 1,000 days in Canada.
