High-ranking officials appointed to new positions

A number of high-ranking officials have been appointed to new positions days after the conclusion of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

Shi Taifeng, 66, from Shanxi province, was named head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, while Li Shulei, 58, from Henan province, became head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, according to recent public reports

Shi began his first job in 1974 and joined the Party in 1982. He graduated from the Law Department of Peking University.

He is also currently vice-chairman of the Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee of the National People's Congress, and president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Li started his career in 1984 and joined the Party in 1986. He also graduated from Peking University. Before the new position, he was deputy head of the CPC Central Committee's Publicity Department in charge of routine work.

Both officials are members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and also members of the CPC Central Committee Secretariat.

On Friday, Chen Jining, 58, from Jilin province, was appointed secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee after approval by the CPC Central Committee.

It decided that Li Qiang will no longer serve as Party secretary of Shanghai. Chen was also named as a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, the decision said.

Before the new appointment, Chen had served as Beijing's mayor. He started his first job in 1998 and joined the Party in 1984.

Chen graduated from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London where he completed a graduate program in environmental systems analysis.

Also on Friday, it was announced that the CPC Central Committee has appointed Huang Kunming, 65, from Fujian province, as a member, standing committee member and secretary of the CPC Guangdong provincial committee. Li Xi no longer concurrently serves at such positions.

Before coming to Guangdong, Huang had been head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. He started his career in 1974 and joined the Party in 1976. Huang graduated from the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University.

Li Xi, Li Qiang, Chen and Huang are all currently members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

On Friday, the Standing Committee of the 15th Beijing Municipal People's Congress accepted Chen's resignation from the post of Beijing mayor.

It decided to appoint 53-year-old Yin Yong to be deputy mayor and acting mayor of Beijing municipality.
