Stampede in Seoul: Xi sends condolences to S. Korea’s Yoon

BEIJING – Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence Sunday to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol over a stampede in the South Korean capital Seoul, which caused heavy casualties.

In his message, Xi said he was shocked to learn of the stampede. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, Xi extended deep condolences over the deaths and sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured.

On the same day, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also sent a message of condolence to South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also sent a message of condolence to South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin over the stampede.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed his condolences over the deaths in the accident and extended sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured.

He expressed the hope that the South Korean side take good care of the Chinese citizens injured in the accident and handle the follow-up matters.
