Xi stresses energy self-reliance during oilfield visit

JINAN – Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said on Thursday that China, as a manufacturing powerhouse, must enhance self-reliance in energy amid efforts to develop the real economy.

Xi encouraged oil workers to strive for new achievements when visiting a drilling platform in the Shengli Oilfield in Dongying City, east China's Shandong province.

Oil production is of great significance to the country, Xi noted.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the discovery of an oilfield in Dongying, which was later named Shengli Oilfield.

On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, Xi extended sincere greetings to China's oil workers.

The development of salt-resistant crops can increase the productivity of soil and help ensure food security in China, Xi noted.

When visiting the Agricultural High-tech Industrial Demonstration Area of the Yellow River Delta, Xi talked with agricultural technicians.

Noting the strategic significance of ecological preservation and agricultural development in the Yellow River Delta, Xi commended them for their efforts in conducting relevant researches.

On Thursday, Xi said that the relocation of residents from the flood plain of the Yellow River is an extraordinary feat.

The new community was built to improve the life of relocated residents from 11 villages along the Yellow River embankments.

Xi said he is very pleased to learn that the relocated residents are living and working in contentment, and making progress in rural vitalization.
